Course Designer- Jack Nicklaus. Period.
“Designing a golf course is my total expression. My golf game can only go on so long, But what I have learned can be put into a piece of ground and that will last beyond me.”
In case you haven’t been reading carefully(!), the most outstanding feature of Stonewolf Golf Club is our close association with Jack Nicklaus. His company is officially called Nicklaus Design, but “Jack” pretty much says it all!
We offer you a Jack Nicklaus Signature design course to play. That differs vastly from a Jack Nicklaus designed course. With the “Signature” designation, you get all Jack and only Jack. Mr. Nicklaus takes a personal role in each and every facet of his “Signature” courses.
Entrusted with the holy grail. We take the care and responsibility of this magnificent golf facility quite seriously. Frankly, the opportunity to take control of a Jack Nicklaus Signature Facility is one of the key reasons why Walters Golf Management got involved as an owner/operator of Stonewolf.
We feel we owe it to the golfing community of Greater St. Louis.
“The course (Stonewolf Golf Club) lends itself to some challenging and beautiful golf holes. What we have created; a golf course that is challenging enough for the good player, but not too difficult for the average player to come out and enjoy their self.” – Jack Nicklaus
What more can we say that hasn’t already been said, except … Jack.
If Jack Nicklaus’ mark on the 20th century was his golf game, his legacy in the 21st century will be his golf course design.
For more than 30 years, Nicklaus courses have blanketed the country and the globe, establishing Jack as one of the world’s premier golf course designers. His stature as a designer is on par with his place in golf history as a player. In 1999, Golf Digest ranked Jack as the world’s leading active designer. And he has shown no signs of slowing down – whether it be in his passion for design or his flair for the creative.
Jack’s design career almost mirrors the record-setting evolution of his playing career. After playing numerous exhibitions throughout the early 1960s on courses designed by the head professional or superintendent at those clubs, Jack got a feel for what he thought was good in course design or how he could improve upon a design. Then in the mid ’60s, when Pete Dye was working on The Golf Club in Jack’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio, he invited Jack to look at what he was doing there and offer suggestions.
Just a few years later, Dye invited Jack to team with him to design Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head jack2sm.JPGIsland, South Carolina. Harbour Town quickly earned its place among the Top 100 courses in the country, followed closely by Jack’s design at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. Considered a break-through design in the ’70s, Muirfield Village has been a fixture among the Top 50 courses in the world.
Today, Jack and his successful firm, Nicklaus Design, have established themselves as industry leaders. With the addition of his four sons and son-in-law, Nicklaus Design enters a new millennium with momentum and well over 240 courses to its credit. Of those, Jack has been involved in 207 of them, and at least 35 of those courses have been ranked in various national and international Top-100 lists over the years. Also, close to a third of Jack’s courses have hosted a professional tournament or amateur championship.
The Nicklaus name long ago earned its place in golf history. But for now and in the future, there are hundreds of golf courses to remind us of another form of excellence attached to the Nicklaus name.
